A single candle of our Advent wreath has been lit, and with each passing week the light will shine brighter as we approach the Nativity of Our Lord.
Consider this early 20th century painting by the English artist William Holman Hunt,
The Light of the World, based on Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any many hear My voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”
This ‘sermon of the frame’ conveys profound truths to the viewer, but perhaps the most poignant observation is that the exterior of the door has no handle – the door can be opened only from within.
The season of Advent calls us out of darkness into light; may we have the courage to unlock our hearts so that He may enter.
